At the end of May, I wrote A Clear and Present Danger to describe the situation on Project 2025 implementation. The conclusion at the end of that post:
“the seeds for a Christian Nationalist state have already been sown. To continue with the analogy: the plant is setting down roots and poking above the ground … the regime is a clear and present danger to American democracy.”
It’s the end of August. The US midterms are a little over two months away. My anxiety level is much higher, particularly given the economic attacks on my country, Canada. There’s also the unwinnable war against Iran with its world-shaking consequences, the withdrawal of US support from Ukraine, health policies that don’t reflect science, climate change denialism …

So, I asked ChatGPT where things stand with respect to the objectives of Project 2025. (Should I apologize for using ChatGPT? I’ve never used AI for writing fiction but I did use it for the last post to help summarize what the Trump regime is doing in the domain of Christian nationalism. I imagine that many are dipping their toes into the AI swamp. But that’s a digression from today’s point.)
Have a look at these summary charts AND all the green lights indicating substantial progress.

Consider how much has been lost, destroyed, warped to nefarious purposes. Hitler took years. Trump and those behind Project 2025 along with the self-dealing oligarchs have almost demolished a great society in less than 18 months. This is not government for the people, by the people.
Factors that contribute to the danger are:
- the weakening of the independent civil service
- the erosion of checks and balances
- the undermining of elections
- the weakening of independent sources of information
Countervailing forces exist:
- federal judges continue to block administration actions
- states are challenging federal authority
- civil-society organizations are litigating
- journalists continue to investigate
- elections still exist
- Congress retains enormous constitutional powers, even though stymied
- Americans continue to organize and protest
- the administration is encountering institutional resistance.
The question – what will Americans do get rid of the regime? Another question – will it be enough to hold back this tsunami? Will the rest of the world survive?
I’m sorry to be gloomy today. However, looking at what’s happening in aggregate like this has changed my worried state to one of down right scared.
