The Admiral’s Wife – Official Launch

Drumroll please …. today is the official launch day for THE ADMIRAL’S WIFE, my fifth novel. The story – a dual timeline novel set in Hong Kong – has been ‘in the works’ for quite some time and I’m delighted to share it with you.

The lives of two women living in Hong Kong more than a century apart are unexpectedly linked by forbidden love and financial scandal.

In 2014, Patricia Findlay leaves a high-powered career to move to Hong Kong, where she hopes to rekindle the bonds of family and embrace the city of her ancestors. Instead, she is overwhelmed by feelings of displacement and depression. To make matters worse, her father, CEO of the family bank, insists that Patricia’s duty is to produce an heir, even though she has suffered three miscarriages.

In 1912, when Isabel Taylor moves to Hong Kong with her husband, Henry, and their young daughter, she struggles to find her place in such a different world and to meet the demands of being the admiral’s wife.

At a reception hosted by the governor of Hong Kong, Isabel meets Li Tao-Kai, an influential member of the Chinese community and a man she met a decade earlier when he was a student at Cambridge.

As the story unfolds, each woman must consider where her loyalties lie and what she is prepared to risk for love.

Some wonderful authors have taken the time to read and endorse THE ADMIRAL’S WIFE. I’m grateful to them all. Many thanks to my beta readers and early readers. I also want to thank Jane Dixon-Smith for her amazing cover. And to my husband Ian, who has been with me on the journey and has been the talent behind getting the novel formatted and onto various retail sites – his love and brilliant support mean everything to me.

Irresistible and absorbing, THE ADMIRAL’S WIFE deftly weaves together the stories of two women born a century apart, bound by obligation, and linked by a secret that could destroy lives and families.” ~ Janie Chang, bestselling author of The Library of Legends

Instantly gripping and heartbreakingThe Admiral’s Wife is a lush dual-timeline novel set in kaleidoscopic Hong Kong. Tod deftly unrolls the parallel stories with the flair of a master storyteller. Her exquisite prose brings light and nuance to the novel’s grand themes of racial bias, identity and cultural and generational conflicts.” ~ Alice Poon, author of Tales of Ming Courtesans

A cleverly knit dual timeline story, featuring two intrepid heroines more than a century apart, as they deal with the old-world expectations and the new-world opportunities of glittering Hong Kong. It’s a fascinating glimpse into that society, and a compelling read.” ~ Gill Paul, author of The Collector’s Daughter

“The Chinese American daughter of a powerful Hong Kong banker is caught between two worlds and two eras as she struggles to understand both. Patricia Findlay—Li Mingyu—stumbles across dark family secrets in this riveting tale of clashing cultures, ruthless corruption, and the consequences of corrosive lies.” ~ James R Benn, author of Road of Bones and other Billy Boyle mysteries.

“M. K. Tod vividly conjures up the old Hong Kong in 1912 and the modern, bustling city with rich, descriptive passages of streets, parks, and gardens. Family secrets and personal ambitions, east and west, collide in this compelling, deeply moving novel.” ~ Weina Dai Randel, award-winning author of The Last Rose of Shanghai
